The deputy leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice, owns a property company – Quidnet REIT Limited. From 2020 to 2022 it paid around £600,000 of dividends to Mr Tice and his offshore trust.
Quidnet was required by law to withhold approximately £120,000 of tax from those dividends and pay it to HMRC. But we believe it's clear from the company's accounts and public filings that Quidnet did not pay the £120,000.
Our report on Quidnet is here
And what is probably the final update on Setu Kamal's attempt to sue me for £8m. The claim was struck out last month; the court then ordered Mr Kamal to repay all of our £146k costs – highly unusual for defamation claims. And, to my slight surprise, Mr Kamal fully repaid me.
All the details
here, including the final court order and the parties' skeleton arguments.
Fighting an £8m libel claim was a very strange experience - the claim was simultaneously deeply silly and slighty terrifying. I couldn't have done it without the support of hundreds of people - some sending dozens of pages of detailed tax analysis, others one line "good luck" emails. All brilliant - thank you.
